The presenters of the ASK Symposium (May 8 2009, National Human Rights Commission, Seoul)
Last weekend (May 8-10) there were three major events within the overseas Korean adoptee community led by Adoptee Solidarity Korea, KoRoot, and TRACK . I have many friends who organized and participated in these important and unprecedented events that helped bring a critical voice to issues within Korean society that are related to ongoing international adoption practices. At the ASK Symposium Alternatives to Adoption: Building a Movement for Change, representative Kim Stoker said, "the majority of the children available for adoption [in Korea], whether domestic or international, are from unwed mothers who must relinquish their children not out of choice, but out of necessity due to the lack of social welfare support combined with patriarchy, poverty, and social stigmatization." I'm extremely proud of my friends and their tireless work in getting the message out.
Lastly, here is a YouTube clip sent out by Jane Jeong Trenka (lead representative of TRACK) who organized an event featuring giant puppets created by Eom Jung-ae. This was staged right in front of the Bosingak bell tower and received a good deal of media coverage.
